Back to basics

Sometimes we train with pucks and sometimes we focus only on the movement. We lock it in with consistent repetitions in a controlled setting so we can fix mistakes and make the movement automatic.

Once it feels solid, we add pucks at a slower pace. We keep the reps going until it’s smooth and controlled, then build up the speed.

Master the basics and everything else gets easier.

Drill breakdown

1️⃣ Stickhandling: Start by pulling the puck on your backhand behind a cone or tire. Slide it across your body, then push it forward to the front. Repeat. This simulates handling the puck behind the net to create options and protect possession.

▶️ Bonus: Keep your head up and have a coach or parent hold up fingers for you to count while doing the drill-adds a cognitive challenge!

2️⃣ Skating: Backward C-cuts into a quick crossover
to gain space behind the net, then transition to forward. Clean edgework and strong footwork are key.

3️⃣ Strength Builder: This drill works your fingers, hands, wrists, forearms, biceps, shoulders, back, and core. Do 3-5 reps per set, 3-5 sets total. Your arms will burn—in the best way.

Embrace the suck. That’s how you get better.

This drill targets footwork, balance, coordination and core strength. It has two key parts.

The first focuses on speed with two quick, explosive c-cuts. The second slows things down with a smooth and controlled knee drop into VH. The goal is to stay sharp and deliberate.

Remember, slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Control leads to speed.

Skating. Especially their footwork.

This drill goes all in on the goalie’s outside edge, which is usually the weaker side, by skating one-legged around a pylon. The focus is on leaning hard into that edge and riding it with control.

Start by dialing in your stance. Knees bent. Hip over skate. Ankle collapsing into the turn. Visualize carving the ice on a tight “C” arc. Push. Glide. Lean. Repeat.

No flashy saves here. Just rock-solid edge control that shows up when it matters.

Great goalies are great skaters. Period.

How do goalies slow the game down mentally? We’ve all seen it. A goalie says the game felt too fast or they panicked handling the puck behind the net.

It starts with goalie-specific reps and pattern recognition. The more you repeat skating and situational drills, the more automatic your movements and decisions become.

Then we add variability. Not every pass is clean. Not every play gives you time. That’s real game pressure.

Through consistent goalie training and layered drills, your brain begins to recognize what’s coming. That’s when the game starts to slow down.

He’s so confident playing the puck that it actually changes how teams attack.

You could see Canada trusting him to:

His puck-handling didn’t just prevent chances. It created offense.

Real edge control starts late.👇🏼

This drill is two parts.

First, holding the end range for longer periods, especially when momentum fades. That takes serious strength and edge control.

The second part is the real key — learning how to retract by pulling your feet back under your body when you don’t have momentum or can’t bob.

This drill forces goalies to hold a wide stance while riding their inside edge down the ice. The slower you go, the harder it gets.

Under the drill:
Take 1 to 2 quick c-cuts to get speed.

Hold the last c-cut in a wide stance. Go as far as your edges will hold.
⬇️
Stay in your stance. Hands up. Stick on the ice. Eyes up.
⬇️
Before you lose momentum or reach the end, squeeze the c-cut back under your body.

That’s end range. That’s where the edge work lives. 🔥

Stick Handling!!👇🏼

Playing the puck — receiving it, passing it, and even ripping a shot on an empty net 🤪 — takes time and practice.

Not many trainers run full sessions focused just on stickhandling and skating. So when we can’t train at GPS, we’ve got to find other ways.

At practice: If your coach gives you a few minutes, use it to handle pucks and shoot. Even while moving pucks during drills, you can get reps in.

At home: Use a shooting board or synthetic ice. Garage, basement, driveway — whatever you’ve got.

The more you do it, the stronger your hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, and back get.

The stronger you get and the more you practice handling the puck the confidence will grow to use it in a game.

If your goalie isn’t working on their stickhandling, they’re missing a huge piece of the game

Being able to handle the puck gives them way more control out there. It stops dump and chase. It helps their D. It gets the puck out quick on the PK or power play. It makes them part of the play, not just watching it happen

The younger they start, the more confident they get. They start reading the play faster, making quicker decisions, and standing out on the ice

It also builds strength. Hands, wrists, arms, shoulders. All the stuff goalies need to be strong and explosive in the crease

This stuff matters now. It’s not extra anymore

We train a wide range of goalies of all ages, levels and abilities and we’re constantly reminding them not to be afraid of falling.

Especially during skating drills.

Sometimes goalies worry about looking bad in front of their peers. Sometimes more experienced goalies are afraid falling will make them look less skilled, especially if they’re older than the rest.

But here’s the truth: falling is okay.

We want goalies to push beyond their comfort zones. That’s how they test their limits and get better. If you’re never challenging your edges or your abilities, you’re not progressing in your development.

Growth starts with falling.

The best goalies didn’t become the best by playing it safe.

Goalies need to be strong, even at their end ranges.

This drill uses double leg C-cuts to help goalies hold their inside edge at the widest point of their stance.

It targets the posterior leg muscles like the glutes, hamstrings, and quads.

There’s a second part to this drill.

The retraction.

Goalies learn how to apply pressure through their foot and use the muscles in their legs to bring their feet back under them.

This activates the interior leg muscles like the adductors, hip flexors, and core stabilizers.

Hockey will force you into your end ranges.
You need the strength and control to keep moving when you’re at your limits.

Quick tips:
• Start smaller and build width over time
• Keep your head up and posture strong
• Keeping your upper body still and in a goalie position.

Some mistakes we see:
• Going too wide and getting stuck
• Losing balance on the inside edge
• Resetting every few pushes
